Import lots of decimals, problem on the 18th
I'm trying to import data from an Excel sheet into a table. Not all of them is imported.
Exl: 0,000801054857569349 becomes
Sql: 0,000801054857569350 when it is imported.
The column in SQL-Server is defined as DECIMAL 28.18, should take all 18 numbers i thought. Tried 28.19 also but it only added another zero at the end.
I've tried importing via DTS and manually import, same result both times.
Any suggestions?Did you try to import text data from an Excel and convert it onto decimal in SQL Server?|||DECIMAL with precision 28 and scale 18. Tried with scale 19 but only got one more zero at the end.|||The cell in Excel is probably a float. Depending on how it is rendered there will be a point where a given source (float) value will produce different target values for different target data types. This is a problem as old as floating point numbers.
Floats are good for measurements, but lousy for counts. What you are seeing could be the difference caused by that quality of a float.
-PatP|||The cell shows up as "Double" if I look at it in design view in an Access DB that has a link to it.
Hope the beancounters can accepts this fact that the number doesn't show up EXACTLY as it is in Excel. I've tried to maually insert the value with all 19 decimal and it shows ok.
I've seen this problem show up when I'm using a C++ application to insert values from Excel into SQL Server via ODBC also. And there the value is picked as a string and then used to build a SQL-Statement. I will get the same values as with the manual import into SQL Server.
Thanks for the comment.
One more workday, then it's Christmas!|||Floats are good for measurements, but lousy for counts.
Huh?
How is a datatype that's imperfect good for anything?|||Floats (reals and doubles) are perfect for dealing with measures, because floats work like measurements work... Counts (INT, MONEY, DECIMAL, etc) are perfect for counts, because they actually are counts. A measurement is an approximation that has some desired degree of precision, and is quick and easy to perform calculations of practically infinite scope at the desired degree of precsion. A count is exact, but fundamentally limited in terms of the kind of calculations it can do and the scope of values it can represent.
When you're dealing with money, you need a count. When you're dealing with computational measures such as C or e, or figuring anything to do with astronomy or weather, counts are almost worthless and floats are appropriate.
You can't use either tool to efficiently do the jobs that the other is built to handle... You can beat either of them into submission and they can pinch-hit for one another, but they are really two different classes of tools even though people sometimes confuse floats and counts when they don't grok them both.

Import from Linux MySql
I know almost nothing about Linux so I have no idea how to get started
accessing the database with SQL from my SQL Server in order to do an import.Hi
Install a MySQL ODBC/OLE DB driver on your Windows Server.
Then use DTS like normal, but your source is the MySQL database (driver is
the driver you installed) and your destination is your SQL Server.
Regards

Import from a file does not load data
table to a .txt file, When I imported table using DTS wizard. I do
not get any errors. Yet, no data is loaded in the table. How can I
troubleshoot the problem. Which logs I can look into to find the
problem.
I am new to SQL SERVER, I am an Oracle DBA trying to learn SQL SERVER
2000.Hi
I assume you are using the import wizard in which case it should have shown
a preview of the data. If you chose the run immediately option it should have
shown the number if records inserted once the copy data step has competed.
How many rows are you expecting from the file?
Are you loading this into a new table?
If the import summary showed no rows but you know the file has data then you
may want to change the deliminators you have specified!

When I did export from the wizard, it put 2 rows in the file, no create
table staement. My table employee alerady exists in the table, it has no
rows before import. I was hpoing it will have 2 rows after import, but it did
not. Is there anyway to turn on some tracing to see where the import had
problems.

When you export using the Export wizard it will only create a data file, you
can script the table creation script through Enterprise Manager or Query
Analyser.
Have you tables under a different schema with the same name?
If you create a DTS package from the Import/Export Wizard you can then
modify the package and use the DTS to log information and handle errors.

table being exported/imported. So when importing, it created a new table and
was putting rows
there. Also while in Enterpirse Manager, I did not see these tables
until today.
It seems to see new tables screated by import, one must disconnect from
database and reconnect to it, that's why I had no idea what was going on.
Thanks a lot for all your help.

The wizard will default the name of the table, but you do have the option to
change it.

created, or to specify an existing table. For an existing table you
can specify if the table is to be truncated first, or the new data
appended to the old. When you get to the window in the wizard with
three columns - Source, Destination, Transform - you can click on
Desination to make changes to the name or select an existing table
from the list. Click on Transform to specify append or replace, and
other options such as controlling the names and data types of the
columns in the table being created.
There is more to the import wizard, and I suggest it is worth your
time playing with it for a while and exploring the options so you are
familiar with what is there. The most important feature not mentioned
so far is that you can save it as a DTS package and then edit it in
the DTS interface - good for minor tweaking.

the schemas information to a set of text files, exports the data to files, created the objects at

Import data from SQL Server
I imported database OldData from SQL Server 6.5 to NewData in SQL Server
2000, and the database can be imported. However, there's no Index in any
table in the NewData.
Would anyone tell me how to fix this problem?
Thanks.
Jason
Hi,
How did you moved the database from SQL 6.5 to SQL 2000? . If you use
"upgrade Wizard" that will automatically copy all objects from SQL 6.5 to
SQL 2000.
If you use DTS or BCP then only the table and data will be transferred to
SQL 2000. You may need to create all the other objects manually.
Thanks

|||Thanks Hari.
I used the upgrade wizard tried to upgrade from 6.5 to 2000, but it show an
error message with SQL-DMO, and the 6.5 has to migrate to 7.0 first.
Is there anyway to upgrade from 6.5 to 2000 without upgrading to 7.0 first?
Thanks for help.

|||Hi Jason,
Using the SQL Server Upgrade wizard you can upgrade directly from SQL 6.5 to
SQL 2000. The steps are detailed below:-
1. Ensure that SQL 6.5 is running and all the databases are up (Run DBCC and
check the databaseconsistency)
2. Update the SQL 6.5 service pack to latest , probably sp5a
3. Install SQL 2000 and Sp3a for sql 2000
4. In SQL 2000 program groups there will be upgrade wizard, it will
automatically sence SQL 6.5 and upgrade

Import data from SQL Server
I imported database OldData from SQL Server 6.5 to NewData in SQL Server
2000, and the database can be imported. However, there's no Index in any
table in the NewData.
Would anyone tell me how to fix this problem?
Thanks.
JasonHi,
How did you moved the database from SQL 6.5 to SQL 2000? . If you use
"upgrade Wizard" that will automatically copy all objects from SQL 6.5 to
SQL 2000.
If you use DTS or BCP then only the table and data will be transferred to
SQL 2000. You may need to create all the other objects manually.
Thanks
Hari

Using the SQL Server Upgrade wizard you can upgrade directly from SQL 6.5 to
SQL 2000. The steps are detailed below:-
1. Ensure that SQL 6.5 is running and all the databases are up (Run DBCC and
check the databaseconsistency)
2. Update the SQL 6.5 service pack to latest , probably sp5a
3. Install SQL 2000 and Sp3a for sql 2000
4. In SQL 2000 program groups there will be upgrade wizard, it will
automatically sence SQL 6.5 and upgrade
the sql 6.5 databases to SQL 2000

import data from Excel
I imported data from Excel to a table on SQL Server throught Data Transformation Services.
All data with a under score(like 1_5, 7_5) were replaced by Nulls. Is there any comment
about that?
Thanks a lot!
Regards,
Kevin JinWhat data type did you have the column that 1_5 was going into?|||you can change the field in sql server table.
data will remain same|||Slynch:
Thank you for your response. I did use nvarchar.

Thank you for your response. Could you please let me know the detail about your idea. I'm interested in that.
Regards,
Kevin Jin|||Importing from Excel is a pain in the neck As far as I can tell, Excel decides what type your data is and that's the final deal. In Excel, save it as a csv text file, then import the text file. I've tried importing from Excel a million different ways and it always deletes data due to some wacky reason. I knew a guy who knew a guy who was on the Excel team and basically, just export from Excel to text and forget about trying to use Excel. In my opinion, they tried to make Excel work like a database so accountants wouldn't have to use Access or learn anything about databases. Unfortunately, Excel's a rotten database.|||PDraigh:
Thank you for your suggestion.
